Fleas in cats

Fleas are tiny but can cause big problems to your cat and your house! Fleas are a source of discomfort, and their bites can trigger Flea Allergy Dermatitis in your cat. Fleas also multiply quickly: this is not only a problem for your cat but also for your home as more than 95% of the flea population may be living off your cat and in the environement, leading to continuous reinfestations.
A single cat can be infested by a very large number of fleas. Up to 245 fleas where once found on a cat, this poor animal likely being bitten hundreds of times a day. Fleas can not only make your cat uncomfortable, but they can make your pet sick.
When an infestation is less severe, fleas may not be that easy to spot. However, you can spot the typical ‘flea dirt’ (flea faeces) on the places where your cat rests or even just observe your cat exhibit abnormal and excessive grooming behaviour or scratching.

Fleas can be responsible for a number of different conditions in your cat, such as:

Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD)

Infections with tapeworms, bacteria (ie. Rickettsiae)

Anaemia in case of severe flea infestations and associated blood loss.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis in cats

Some cats are more sensitive than others to flea bites. They can have reactions to the flea saliva which causes intense itching and a rash each time they are bitten: this is called Flea Allergy Dermatitits (FAD) or Flea Bite Hypersensitivity.

You may notice your cat has pink to red skin and hair loss through overgrooming. There can also be small red crusts and bumps on the back and rump. Only complete eradication of all the life stages of fleas will protect your cat from Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD).
