Dirofilariosis (D. immitis), also known as heartworm disease, is a serious and potentially fatal illness caused by a worm that lives in the pulmonary arteries and the right side of a dog’s heart. The transmission of this worm, known as Dirofilaria immitis, requires a mosquito as an intermediate host, with the dog being the definitive host.
The danger this parasite poses, is that there are very few clinical signs of infection until it is too late, which is why it is called a "silent" or "hidden" disease.
