Sand flies in dogs
Sand flies are small flying insects. They can transmit pathogens responsible for severe diseases, such as leishmaniosis. Sand flies are widespread and can be found throughout the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and China. They are mostly active from dusk to dawn. They represent an almost invisible threat – sand flies are so tiny than they are rarely noticed. Female sand flies feed on the blood of animals, including dogs.

Leishmaniosis in dogs
It can take anything from three months to several years before clinical signs of leishmaniosis appear. It can cause various symptoms including fever, weight loss, abnormal growth of the claws, skin lesions, renal disease and eventually death. Dogs are particularly at risk of this disease but it can also affect people making it zoonotic. This makes prevention even more important.
Leishmaniosis is a severe disease caused by a pathogen called Leishmania. This pathogen is mostly transmitted by female sand flies when they take a blood meal from another animal.
