Ticks in dogs
Ticks wait for the host (i.e. your dog) on tall grass or shrubs. Within 2h, a dog walking outdoors can be infested by over 100 ticks. Ticks are so tiny, you may miss them on your dog’s fur. After each walk, be sure to check your dog’s coat, especially around the head, ears, and neck. If you find a tick, remove it carefully using a tick remover, being sure you have removed the whole tick, including the mouth parts.
Ticks can transmit many pathogens responsible for serious diseases called tick-borne diseases, such as Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis.
Babesiosis in dogs
Babesiosis is a disease caused by a protozoan parasite called Babesia. Ticks transmit Babesia to a dog during their bite. Once inside the dog, these tiny parasites attack and destroy the red blood cells, leading to severe anemia and other complications. It may vary from dog to dog but it generally takes a few days (about 5-10) after the infectious tick-bite before babesiosis becomes visible.
If your dog's mood suddenly changes and they are lethargic and depressed; stay alert, these could be early signs of babesiosis. If you suspect babesiosis, don't wait! Take your dog to the vets as soon as possible.
Lyme Disease
Some tick species can transmit the bacteria (Borrelia) responsible for Lyme disease. This disease is not only harmful to humans but also to dogs. One tick bite is enough for the infection to occur. Transmission can happen <24 hours after the tick attaches to the skin. Therefore, it’s crucial to repel or remove ticks as soon as possible.
Lyme disease symptoms in dogs may take weeks to months to appear, and they generally mimic signs of other diseases, including lameness and lethargy. If your dog is not behaving as usual, consult your veterinarian.
